Trump says he would like to punch democrats in the face for the awful things they said about him this week. This seems like a key point:
There’s at least three steps in leadership:
1. Having a thought
2. Sharing that thought with others
3. Taking action to implement that thought
Most adults have a shared understanding that working well with others means that we reflect about what happens in step 1 (working to understand how those thoughts are influenced by emotion, unconscious biases, etc.), ensuring not all of #1 makes it to step #2. For Trump, steps 1 and 2 are merged into a single “Spew stream of consciousness into nearest microphone.”
I don’t know if he assumes that judgment and nuance is asserted before step 3, or if he thinks judgment and nuance have no place in modern political discourse, but there’s no judgment involved in what he says. I think this is the closest I can get to understanding what he means when he talks about “political correctness” (though I’m convinced that neither he nor his followers can offer a definition of “political correctness” significantly different than “don’t say the bigoted things that pop into your head”). I’m not certain what is the purported benefit of this approach.
